Do AI Trading Agents Actually Make Money? The Evidence
62.5/100 — the AGI-2027 Thesis Tracker, eight verdicts, each with a flip condition.
The base rates a trading agent has to beat
| Finding | Number | Source (dated) |
|---|---|---|
| Brazilian futures day traders active 300+ days who lost money | 97% | Chague, De-Losso & Giovannetti, "Day Trading for a Living?" (2020); 1.1% earned more than minimum wage |
| Taiwan day traders with persistent skill across 15 years of complete market data | <1% | Barber, Lee, Liu & Odean, "The cross-section of speculator skill" (J. Financial Markets, 2014) |
| Retail CFD accounts losing money, per the disclosures EU regulators forced brokers to print | 74–89% | ESMA product-intervention measures, 2018 onward |
| Decay of published strategy returns once the strategy is known | −26% / −58% | McLean & Pontiff, "Does Academic Research Destroy Stock Return Predictability?" (J. Finance, 2016): out-of-sample / post-publication |
| Probability that enough backtest variants produce a spectacular in-sample result by chance | → 1 | Bailey, Borwein, López de Prado & Zhu, "Pseudo-Mathematics and Financial Charlatanism" (Notices of the AMS, 2014) |
None of these studies is about AI. That is the point: they are about the game the AI agent is being sold to play. A tool that makes strategy construction faster does not change the arithmetic of who is on the other side of the trade — and the overfitting result says making backtests easier to run at scale makes the headline numbers less trustworthy, not more.
What the money is doing (and what that proves)
The funding is real and recent. Chinese tech press (Sina Tech, PEdaily, 36Kr) reported on August 17, 2026 that PandaAI — a Chongqing AI-trading-infrastructure startup founded 2024, built on the quant-education IP "量化技能李不白" — closed three rounds in two months (seed plus two angel rounds, tens of millions of yuan cumulative, L2F leading). The same month's agent-sector tallies reported about $633M across 12 days (HappyRobot's $150M Series C and Zenity's $125M among them). Our definition page on PandaAI lists what is verified versus self-reported.
Funding proves investor appetite for the picks-and-shovels business — selling tools to would-be traders, a revenue stream that arrives whether or not users profit. It is not evidence about user returns. Exchanges, brokerages and signal-sellers have always made money on activity; "the tooling vendor prospers" and "the tool's users beat the market" are different claims, and only the first one is currently documented.
Vendor claims vs. what is verifiable
| Claim type | Status | What the record shows |
|---|---|---|
| "Natural language → factor → backtest → execution" pipelines exist and run | Product claim | Checkable by any user; the software genuinely works as software |
| Funding rounds, valuations, user counts | Reported / self-reported | Rounds covered by named press; user counts trace to the vendors themselves |
| Backtested strategy performance shown in marketing | Unverifiable as stated | In-sample results; overfitting risk grows with the number of variants tried (AMS 2014) |
| Users of the platform make money net of costs | No audited evidence | No vendor publishes an independently verifiable live ledger of user returns, as of August 2026 |
The flip condition — what would change this verdict
This page is falsifiable, in writing: the verdict flips the day a vendor publishes a live ledger with the same discipline we apply to our own claims — signals or positions timestamped before outcomes, every result graded including losses, misses never deleted, methodology fixed in advance, net of costs. That standard exists and is cheap to meet; we run one ourselves on Justin Sun's market calls (the SunWatch track record) and another on copying 13F filings at filing-day prices. A vendor that meets it and shows user-level outperformance earns a rewritten page. A vendor that shows only backtests has told you which business they are actually in.

SunWatch logs market calls as pre-registered triggers graded hit/miss with misses never deleted, and follows disclosed positions daily — the control group for every "our AI trades better" pitch.

Do AI trading agents actually make money for their users?
There is no audited public evidence that they do. As of August 2026 no retail AI-trading-agent vendor publishes an independently verifiable live track record of user returns. What is documented instead: active retail traders overwhelmingly lose (97% of Brazilian futures day traders active 300+ days lost money; fewer than 1% of Taiwan day traders were persistently profitable), and backtests — the industry's main sales exhibit — are systematically inflatable.
Why are backtests not proof that a trading strategy works?
Because trying enough strategy variants on the same history will always produce a spectacular in-sample result by chance — Bailey, Borwein, López de Prado and Zhu formalized this as backtest overfitting (Notices of the AMS, 2014). The pattern shows up in live data too: McLean and Pontiff (Journal of Finance, 2016) found published strategy returns decay roughly 26% out-of-sample and 58% post-publication.
Why is so much money being invested in AI trading agents in 2026?
The funding wave is real: Chinese press (Sina Tech, PEdaily, 36Kr) reported on August 17, 2026 that PandaAI closed three rounds in two months, and agent-sector startups reportedly raised about $633M across 12 days in early August. Funding proves investor appetite for the picks-and-shovels business — selling tools to would-be traders — not that the tools' users make money. Those are different businesses.
What evidence would change this verdict?
A vendor publishing a falsifiable live ledger: positions or signals timestamped before outcomes, all results graded including losses, misses never deleted, methodology fixed in advance — the shape of record we maintain ourselves in the SunWatch track record. If an AI trading agent vendor publishes that and it shows net user-level outperformance after costs, this page's verdict flips. None has, as of August 2026.
